Do you believe that all people, blind and sighted, have the right to read?
For blind people, braille is the only medium for true literacy. As useful as tape recorders and synthesized speech are, they remain inadequate substitutes for the act of reading and writing.
The Power of Braille
Blind people use braille best if they've had the opportunity to learn it young at the same time their sighted peers learn to read print.
Research has shown a correlation between a blind person’s early learning of braille and his or her lifetime achievement. Although 70% of blind people in the United States are unemployed, one study shows that 90% of those who are employed are braille readers.
You would be amazed at how many times I am asked why I consider braille books so important for Andrew when there are so many books on tape. My standard response is, “Why is learning to read print so important to you when your child can listen to tapes?” Children need to be literate, whether they read print or braille.
